The Metronomes reissue on Mannequin OUT NOW!!! FACT MAG free download track

We’ve written at length in these pages before about our love of Mannequin Mailorder.

The Italian label has brought us some extraordinary reissues culled from the margins of 80s synth wave, goth, post-punk and electro-pop, as well as treating us to new releases from modern day standard-bearers like Frank (Just Frank) and Led Er Est.

Their latest offering is a lavish reissue of hard-to-find music by The Metronomes, who formed in Melbourne in 1979. Comprising members Al Webb, Andrew Picouleau and Ash Wednesday, the latter these days a member of Einsturzende Neubauten, The ‘Nomes recorded two classic minimal synth albums, Multiple Choice (1980) and Regular Guys (1985); both these albums feature in Mannequin’s lavish new triple-vinyl collection. The albums are pressed across two 12″s and housed in a gatefold cover with rare pictures and an insert with notes by Al Webb. As if that weren’t enough, a 7″ featuring tracks from the band’s ‘Saturday Night’/'Sunday Morning’ and ‘A Circuit Like Me’ singles is thrown into the bargain.

We’ll let Mannequin tell you more about the music and its provenance:

“Their first 7’’ single “Saturday Night’/'Sunday Morning’ came out in 1980, and featured a real metronome as rhythm section with instrumentals layered over. The second, ‘A Circuit Like Me’/'Closed Circuit’ from 1980, is more experimental in terms of drum machines and rhythm sections. Both sides were recorded using a borrowed Roland CR 78. It was the first time that they had used a vocal in their compositions, courtesy of a lady called Talking Judy.

“The first full-length, Multiple Choice, was recorded in the winter of 1980, using Roland Strings, a mini-Korg, some ARP synthesizers and a Boss DR-55, a drum machine that was intensivly used by many minimal synth bands during the 80s and by legendary bands like Sisters of Mercy or New Order in their first songs.

“The second album Regular Guys, published in 1985, was recorded after a break in which all the members’ various lives and careers took left and right hand turns. It was surely more premeditated, as most of the songs arrived in studio already written. Each writer had creative control over their respective songs, a long-standing Metronomes road rule; only one track had what you might call a spontaneous birth. The LP featured the next wave of synth toys like the Oberheim synth, Oberheim drum machine and Prophet 5. Once the programming was set up, the instrument tracks were bounced via a PCM box direct to video tape, a pioneering process which almost entirely eliminated tape hiss.”

Mannequin’s exquisite package is entitled The Ballad Of The Metronomes, and is being released in a hand-numbered, limited edition of 500. The first 100 copies will also include a self-explanatory bonus CD-R, The Metronomes Play Their Favourites. Find more information and pre-order the collection here, and download ‘A Circuit Like Me’ below.

Art Boulevard S/T Demo Tape 1986

Art Boulevard, born in 1985 in Bergamo (northern Italy), immediately stood out from the pack for their aesthetic and existential attraction to post-punk combined with a musical vision that was straight out of the late sixties: “rock as art” and not merely as an urgent expression of adolescent rebellion.

Here's their self-titled demo tape from 1986.

The Metronomes - A Circuit Like Me (from Mannequin MNQ 015)

Mannequin is more than enthusiastic to announce the re-release of both the LPs (“Multiple Choice” from 1980 and “Regular Guys” from 1985) plus the 2 singles seven inches “Saturday Night / Sunday Morning” and “A Circuit Like Me” from this legendary minimal synth band from Australia.

The group was an integral part of the early electronic music scene in Australia and their releases have become a collector’s item in Europe, as they are mostly impossibile to find.

The Metronomes first appeared in Melbourne in 1979, initial members were rock journo-synth player Al Webb, the bass player Andrew Picouleau (Secret Police, Sacred Cowboys) and the synth-pioneer Ash Wednesday, nowdays a live tour member of Einsturzende Neubauten. Al himself will admit later that Ash’s ingenuity in creating something out of very little was the key to the Metronomes sounding as ‘produced’ as they did.

This track is an extract from their second single ‘A Circuit Like Me / Closed Circuit’ from 1980, addice more to experimentation with drum machines, in fact the rhytm sections for both sides were recorded using a borrowed Roland CR 78. It was the first time in their compositions that a vocal had been used, courtesy of a lady called Talking Judy.

Afterimage - The Long Walk 7'' 1981

Started like most bands, by a bunch of idealistic if somewhat wary musical adventurers, Afterimage came out with a roar on the burgeoning Los Angeles music scene in 1980. Guitarist A Produce answered a local ad from Rich Evac (bass) and Holland de Nuzzio (drums) and found a dynamic rhythm section. When he brought vocalist and saxophonist Daniel Voznick (aka Alec Tension) the chemistry was right and a sound was forged. Afterimage used its "thunderous rhythm, threatening bass, wailing bursts of sax and haunted vocals” to create powerful brain and body music that tore through the Los Angeles music scene.

Afterimage was one of the first of L.A.'s psychedelic/art/mystery bands to be committed to vinyl. Their threatening bass, wailing bursts of sax and haunted vocals pick up on the brief flurry of experimantal ominousness of English groups like Wire, Joy Division and Magazine.

Here ripped their first seven inch single.

Soviet Soviet

Nowadays the music has changed and part of the change are the Soviet Soviet, these three guys: Alessandro, Andrea and Alessandro are ready to show to everyone how a mix of post-punk, new rave and new wave can be so sweet for the ears. With sounds that can refresh the “new thing” movement this brand new band, one year ago in Pesaro (Italy) gave life to a project and now they have released their first EP “Soviet Soviet” where we can appreciate all the power that can only be done with an aggressive bass, a new uploaded drums beat and a crying guitar for create a cloudy atmosphere that can carry the melodies slowly by the air.

Their nextcoming release is a 12'' EP split with Frank (Just Frank), for the italian cult post punk and minimal synth label Mannequin.

About FJF, they are a UK/FR cold wave band and they recently released a well-acclaimed full lenght album on Wierd Records (NY), the home of bands like Xeno & Oaklander and Led Er Est.

Also, Soviet Soviet were recently featured in many important zines and blogs like Pitchfork, NME, Blow Up, Artrocker, Urban Polemik, Worth Knowing Pleasures, Marksman, Le Choix de Mlle Eddie, Soundslike, This Is The New Thing. Also, a QR code, where it was possible to download for free a track included in the split, was featured on the cover of Kult Magazine.

Newclear Waves

Newclear Waves, hailing from Rome, explores droned out electro pop territories with an interest for a refreshing hyperactive 80s New Wave. Newclear Waves' soundscapes seem to surround a fruitful visual-graphical imaginary which deals with mass consumption, apocalyptic visions, post-modernism and the order of chaos. A promising new coming in the universe of home made electronic avant-gardism.

Degada Saf - No Inzro CD Digipak Ltd Ed 500 copies (Mannequin, MNQ 009)

Mannequin continues its archeological mission bringing back to the modern format of the CD the cult italian new wave band Degada Saf, with their LP No Inzro from 1984.

Degada Saf - No Inzro CD Digipak Ltd Ed 500 copies (Mannequin, MNQ 009)

Release date: 20 September 2010

Degada Saf were a transgressive-dada-ist musical combo coming from Veneto. The project has seen the light back in the 80s thanks to the reunion of two charismatic experimental sound makers, Fausto Crocetta and Luigi Campalani (with additional sounds provided by Fabio Basso, Gianni Baggio and Stefano Dal Col).
The music of Degada Saf suggests a peculiar mixture of post-modernism synthesised electro assaults, new wave’s imaginative minimalism and pop art aesthetic vision. The sound material of No Inzro makes constant interferences between rigorous avant-gardism, alternative music styles and colourfully plastic electro pop. The spectrum of musical imagination reveals a lot of good surprises, notably with the opening theme “La Rhumba de Shang Hai” which directly gives the tonality of the entire album: kitschy retro-popish ambiences based on dancing minimal hypno pulses and efficiently cold melodies. “Ris du Fles” is an intriguing-theatrical piece based on synth waves, absurd repetitive voices, surreal electro oscillations and skeletal e-guitar sequenze. “Tri-Banal” and “Loda Loda” are spaced out mechanical pop songs. Both songs admit obsessional abstract repetition, moody weird vocalizations, circular electro arpeggios and dissonant sound frequencies, in a way very similar to the experiments that Cabaret Voltaire were doing in the same period. “Zom Africa” is an instinctive pop-ish song, always bringing to the fore this massive, recognisable 80’s atmosphere. “Poli Su Mis”, “Om” and “No Inzro” deliver a convincing return to more dramatic, veiled electro-pop variations. Cynically and always in a jubilant provocative way it seems to open on a musical metaphor referring to negativity, conformity and anxiety within the consumer subject of late capitalism. A groovy and captivating electro experience. A pretty decent introduction to the band’s very own musical universe. Warmly recommended for those who are into minimal electro pop fantasies (Automat, New Order, Alphaville, late Kraftwerk...).

MNQ 012 Led Er Est / Ancien Régime 12'' SPLIT EP ltd ed 500 copies OUT NOW!!!

Mannequin had a dream and it has come true, a split vinyl between Led Er Est (New York, US) and Ancien Régime (Rome, Italy).

Led Er Est hailing from Brooklyn are one of the leaders of the new cold wave and minimal synth scene, signed to scene leaders Wierd Records and recently released their ‘Dust On Common’ album which could have quite happily been released on Mute in 1979 alongside Fad Gadget and The Normal. Cheap drum machines and synths hammer away relentlessly forming a post-industrial soundscape for sombre yet emotive vocals.

Ancien Régime hailing from Rome, moving closer to the spirit of the 80s new wave, the band's sound incorporates influences from '80s dark wave music and modern indie-alternative rock. For the 12'' Split the 4 tracks were produced with a full analog synths and drum machines setup at Mannequin studio.

Section 25 - Charnel Ground / Haunted 7'' 1980

Section 25 were formed in Blackpool, Lancashire in November 1977.

Initially they were a duo, consisting of brothers Larry Cassidy (bass, vocals) and Vincent Cassidy (drums). In June 1978 they made their live debut, and in November were joined by guitarist Paul Wiggin.
Their debut 7", "Girls Don't Count", was released in July 1980 on Factory Records, produced by Ian Curtis and Rob Gretton of Joy Division. All Section 25 releases would be released through either Factory Records (until the demise of that label), or the subsidiary label Factory Benelux . Their debut LP, Always Now, was released in 1981 and produced by Martin Hannett. It was rumoured to have been housed in the most expensive and elaborate sleeve in the label's history (designed by Peter Saville) utilising an exclusive 'marble' effect design printed on the inner jacket and a fold-out cover that resembled a match-book similar to the cover used by Cabaret Voltaire for their "2x45" lp.

The three-piece group played many gigs in Britain and Northern Europe between 1979 and 1981, both as a headline act and with other Factory Records artists, such as Joy Division, A Certain Ratio, Blurt, The Durutti Column, Crispy Ambulance and New Order. The group also released a self-produced second album, The Key of Dreams. However the original line-up split in 1982 when Paul Wiggin declined to fly to the US for their first North American tour.

Ciao Larry, we will always love you!

Sad Lovers & Giants - Colourless Dream 7'' 1981

Sad Lovers & Giants are a rock band from Watford, England who formed in 1981. Their sound blends post-punk, atmospheric keyboards and psychedelia and the band has been described as "a pastoral Pink Floyd."
The band's members have included Garçe Allard (vocals), Tristan Garel-Funk (guitar), Tony McGuinness (now part of the trance trio Above & Beyond) (guitar), Cliff Silver (bass), Ian Gibson (bass), David Wood (keyboards and saxophone), Juliet Sainsbury (keyboards), Marco Müllner (keyboards), Nigel Pollard (drums & percussion) and Wilberforce Hicks (keyboards).

The original lineup produced two studio albums, Epic Garden Music and Feeding the Flame, before splitting in 1983. During this initial period they recorded a John Peel Session for the BBC and a live concert for the Dutch Radio Hilversum station, which was subsequently released as the album Total Sound. Live performances included headline dates at UK colleges and clubs with occasional trips to Europe, although they did support The Sound at a major London venue on the day Epic Garden Music entered the UK independent charts.

2nd Layer - State Of Emergency E.P. 7'' 1980

Second Layer was an experimental project inbetween Adrian Borland's previous punk band the Outsiders and the formation of the Sound later. The debut ep "Courts Or Wars" was minimalist punk with a drum machine whereas the later "State Of Emergency" ep was pure discordant noise. World Of Rubber has to be the grimmest album Borland ever involved himself in. Heavy-metallish guitars, Suicide-style machine rhythm and ugly, grayish tones from an ARP synth sums up what you get here.
